The Importance of Vertical-Specific Marketing for Modern MSPs
The Importance of Vertical-Specific Marketing for Modern MSPs
The MSP model has come a long way over the past decade. Back then, most of us were still busy moving clients to the cloud, “remote work” was a novelty, and ransomware felt like something you read about more than something you had to fight every day. Fast-forward to today, and the game has completely changed. Clients expect MSPs to manage hybrid and multi-cloud environments, keep them safe from AI-powered threats, and even help them understand how to leverage AI in their own businesses.
With all that complexity, one thing hasn’t changed: if you’re chasing every referral across every random industry, you’re working harder than you need to. You keep relearning the same lessons in different verticals, and you never get to reuse the hard-won knowledge you’ve already paid for in sweat and labor.
That’s why vertical-specific marketing isn’t just a smart play anymore – it’s survival.
Why Vertical Focus Pays Off
Every industry has its quirks. Healthcare means HIPAA and telehealth. Finance means compliance headaches and tight security. Law firms live and die by their case management apps and uptime. Manufacturing runs lean with more workers than devices.
If you’re a generalist MSP, you start from scratch every time. But when you pick a vertical and really dig in, you become the expert who “gets” them. And prospects want to work with the MSP who already speaks their language, not the one who needs a crash course after the agreement is signed.
Choosing Verticals Today
You might be tempted to look at your client list, count which industries show up the most, and call it a day. That’s fine until you realize your top vertical is sliding into decline. Remember the pandemic? The bottom fell out of the hospitality, food service, media and entertainment, and tourism industries, and a lot of MSPs serving those industries scrambled to replace disappearing clients.
So, choose carefully. Here’s what really matters now:
Is the industry stable and growing? Don’t hitch your wagon to a shrinking market.
Do they have the budget? If they can’t pay for recurring services, you’ll be stuck in break-fix land.
What’s the tech footprint? Lots of endpoints and apps? Or ten workers sharing two PCs?
What compliance pressures exist?HIPAA, PCI, GDPR, AI rules, and you need to bring answers.
Where are they located? Are there enough of them in your reach, or can you support them remotely?
Do you have champions? Testimonials and referrals in a vertical are gold.
Pick two or three industries that check these boxes and build from there.
The Modern Way to Market Today
Ten years ago, postcards and industry-specific trade shows were common tactics. They still exist, but you’ve got better tools now. Today’s prospects expect to see proof online long before they meet you in person.
- Write case studies and blog posts that tackle their problems.
- Host a short webinar on security or compliance for that vertical.
- Use LinkedIn Sales Navigator to target the right titles instead of blasting everyone.
- Let happy clients tell their story on video. It’s way more convincing than anything you can write.
- And yes, use AI (safely) to help personalize your outreach, but keep the human touch in the delivery.
The good news? You don’t need to match your largest competitors with giant trade show budgets. You just need to be focused, authentic, and consistent.
Security, Compliance, and AI: The New Table Stakes
Here’s the truth: if you’re not leading with security today, you won’t even get in the door. Zero trust, 24/7 monitoring, and ransomware response. These aren’t upsells anymore, they’re table stakes.
Compliance is right behind it. Healthcare needs HIPAA. Finance wants audit trails. Manufacturing worries about supply chain risk. Every vertical wants assurance that you’ll keep them compliant and out of the headlines.
And yes, AI is on everyone’s mind. Your clients want to know how to use it without handing their data to bad actors. Be the MSP that helps them use AI responsibly, and you’ll be seen as a strategic, forward-thinking partner – transforming your value from the server room to the boardroom.
The ROI Reality Check
One lesson from a decade ago still holds true: don’t waste money on marketing that doesn’t pay off. Big trade show booths might look impressive, but if you can get better results from a targeted LinkedIn campaign for a fraction of the cost, why sink the cash?
Track your results. Double down on what’s working. Cut what isn’t. It’s as simple as that.
Bottom Line
The MSP market is expected to top $1 trillion by 2033. That’s a huge opportunity, but generalists will be squeezed by competition and commoditization. The MSPs that thrive will be the ones that specialize, deliver rock-solid security, help clients stay compliant, and guide them through the AI revolution.
So sit down, choose your verticals wisely, and commit to them. It’s still one of the smartest early moves you can make to maximize your marketing return and your service profits.
And remember. Just like poker, it’s not about playing every hand. It’s about knowing which tables to sit at and making the right bets once you’re there.
